If you have a chipped, discolored or unevenly spaced tooth, chances are that when you look in the mirror, that is the first thing you notice. And, it may seem like that is the only thing other people notice about you. Let’s be honest, even minor problems with your teeth can have a major impact on your life. Fortunately, dental veneers are perfect for fixing those kinds of issues.
Dental veneers are thin shells, often made of porcelain that fit over the front of the tooth. They are custom-made to fit your tooth, and will blend in with the rest of your smile. To place a veneer, your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from your tooth and take an impression. That impression will be sent to a dental lab which will craft your veneer, and you will be given a temporary one. When your veneer is ready, your dentist will attach it to your tooth with dental cement. A veneer can last for over ten years, but it will not last a lifetime. It can be damaged by eating hard or tough foods, or by chewing on ice, pens, or other hard objects. If you are in the habit of clenching or grinding your teeth, which is also known as bruxism, you could damage your veneers. You will need to work with your dentist to address this issue. Your veneer can also be stained by dark-colored foods and beverages, and by tobacco use. You will need to see your dentist to have the color of your veneer restored. Over time, the cement holding your veneer in place may wear away. If that happens, and your veneer falls off, save it and bring it with you to the dentist.
